Third Reflection

Finally, we reached the end of the e-portfolio session and so this should be my last reflection about it and also Tech Comm assignment. I take quite a long time to complete a reflection usually especially second reflection which took few weeks to be completed. This is because I do two times on it because I found it is too short for my first post on it and Madam L give the same comment for me also. For this reflection, we are asked to write much longer than the previos one which really make me feel hard. Anyway, I will just try my best to write as much as I can. Hopefully you, who are reading my reflection will not feel it as a vapid work.

Our title of the recommendaion report is about building new car park whether mass parking lot or leveled car park in our campus. The idea is being decided after filtering many other suggestion of idea. We think this title would be the best choice as our lecturer also like it. Before start the rea recommendation report, we have to prepare a simple proporsal first. Our group done it very fast since our task was divided perfectly and also because of our high cooperating among group members. For the real recommendation report, I was being given the part of introduction which is the simplest part since I am the only one who do not same hostel with other group members. For this, I would like to make gratefull acknowledgement to Syam who play a role as a 'big sister' for the recommendation for her good arrangement and consideration. Of course, I would like to thank to others group members who gave good team work and also Ms. Hazlen for provide so many usefull comments. For the presentation, I do not provide my work on it since I am far away from other group members. Due to this, I do not have enough time to do well preparation so I have to be spontaneous when presenting my part which is including bachground, objectives and methods of investigation.

The main five things we learned from Technical Communication 2 is resume, cover letter, interview, meeting and recommendation report. As the name of subject, it is very important in our future especially communication on our job. The skill of writing resume and cover letter is needed to ensure that we can get a job once we have finished our study which means it is a starter for us to step in the future world. Besides, the skill of interview is very important for seeking a job which many of us is fear of it. Through mock interview, we have prepaed ourselve with a good experience and may do better in a real one. For meeting, it is important as well to let us know more about the accurate way of a formal meeting so that we can handle meetings in a organizable way. Although the marks of mock meeting is replaced with the exercises of Myline, we have the opportunity to feel the condition of a meeting because we are asked to try on it during tech Comm class. Recommendation report is a best way to express ourselve of providing idea in our future working. The Chief Executive Officer can judge our ability through it and may lead us to be promoted.

to be continue...

Second Reflection

I have let myself down because i do not do as what i promise which is to put more effort on the blog. I always give myself too much excuse of I am too busy on my study. So I am finally still a person who is outdated, feeling ashamed to write the second reflection. However, as a student of BMCD, I must complete my second reflection.

I learned a lot from resume and cover letter especially the way to express myself. I became more confident after writing both resume and cover letter. This is because i have to discuss as much ability that i have as possible and so i discovered more strengths in myself. The skill of writing both resume and cover letter is very important for applying job in future. I felt quite guilty when talk about my preparation on both resume and cover letter. This is because i does not try my best to do them. I was doing them during Chinese New Year and certainly my mood is in relaxing more than studying. Hence, that time my mind just thinking to finish them as soon as possible without putting much effort. I refered many examples before i start to write them as that time I do not have any idea on how to write them. However, my speed on writing it is still very low since i confused with some statement on the job advertisement. Therefore, I was seeking for the answer from friends and family and finally i done a cover letter and resume which are very simple 1. I do not satisfied with them actually but I was run out of idea already. Finally, i just submit a very short and simple cover letter and resume which can be found at COVER LETTER and RESUME on the right of my blog.

For the interview, i felt very disappointed as well. My group is the 3rd one and also the last one on the thursday. Hence, I do not prepare a lot on it since i thought i will have enough time for it. I just simply read some questions on tech comm book the night before the day of interview. I do not even find any information about the company which i will apply for as my 'sixth sense' told me that i will not be asked the question. The day was reached. i am the first one who get into the interview place because i am the only one who went there by bus. I asked Ms. Hazlen hints on the questions of interview as she reached there after i reached there a while. I am feeling shock when she emphase that the question background of company is one of the questions which she must ask because I do not do any preparation on it before. Hence, I start searching the information using the computer of Pusat Bahasa 3(place of interview) quickly. At that moment, i deeply realise the important to be punctual because i will totally lost if i go there just on time and start the interview straight away.

My mind is totally "blank" when it was my turn to talk although i have done some preparation before. I feel more and more stressful when i am listening conversation of my group members who did very well. I answered many questions without using my brain because i am too nervous. All those words are just like come out from my mouth without pass through my brain first because i found that it was too hard for me to recall what i have talk after the interview session is done. As a conclusion, I must do well preparation before an interview and also to improve my english level in future.

First Reflection

First Reflection

When I first access to Internet, I thought that its function is just to search information for project, that is when I am still in primary school. Now, of course, the function is expanding: to download songs, to watch free movie, and... that's all. What i want to express is that i never make use of Internet to do something more benefit even friendster or facebook. I am such an outdated person. Therefore, I felt puzzled when i heard that we need to construct an e-portfolio for our tech comm subject where other class does not. I felt troublesome when I was asked to write my first reflection which has to refer to:

However, i found that i am really such a foolish that have a thinking which is totally wrong! This is actually a great chance for me to learn to be updated since our world is now change to 'e-world' already. Here, i wanna apologise to L and Mdm. H for my emptiness and thank you to let me have the chance to learn more.

This blog is currently a tech comm class’s homework and I hope it will change to my hobby soon. This is actually a good space for me to express myself more and to understand more the usage of Internet instead of just do nonsense things with it. This blog will be very useful in my future life. And one thing that it’s different from other people’s blog is that is I do not need to spend too much time, slobber and energy to promote my blog since my dear classmates is forced to view my blog because this is their homework and of course is mine too.

My blog appearance is very simple for now. However, I believe that I will have an advanced web page soon!

Recommendation Report

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Objectives

The recommendation report is a response to both students’ and staffs’ according to lack of parking space in Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UteM). Thus, as a member of the Students Representative Council (MPP), two options will be analyzed. Then, the best solution will be recommended in order to solve the parking space problems to UTeM’s office of Asset Management & Development. The two solutions that we will analyze would be whether to have mass parking lot or leveled car park.

The main objective of this recommendation report is to recommend the best option to be adapted by UTeM’s Asset Management & Development Office to solve the problem of limited parking space in UTeM for students and staffs. Moreover, the other perks will be suggested too such as to add more parking spaces which are located nearer to faculty. In addition, the parking space will be completed with high security system for the vehicles parked there.

1.2 Methods of Investigation

In order to complete this analysis, there are several methods that have been used several in order to get the informations. The main source of our informations is internet. Generally, internet stored a lot of information and it is very easy to search for the informations needed. The other method is interviewing appropriate officers from Asset Management & Development Office. After referring to the office, the range of cost that should be spent can be estimated. Furthermore, more constructive ideas can be taken from the officers since they have more experiences on how to handle the matters. The third method of investigation is handing out questionnaires to students and staffs from various faculties and departments. This method is the most important to collect more opinions according to this project. Finally, more information, solution and recommendations will be taken from students of other universities to obtain more information.

1.3 Scope

This recommendation report will discus about the two options to solve the parking problem in UTeM. Both of the options are mass parking lot and leveled car park. This report will only discus on the construction cost, facilities and capacity. The other criteria for instance the building design and the area of the building will not be included in this report.

1.4 Organization

The first part of this report is an introduction to the task. This part includes objectives, methods of investigation, scope and problem definition. It will be followed by the data tabulation and analysis which is the result from questionnaires and interview. The next chapter will recommend the best option to solve the parking matter in UTeM. Finally, the last chapter will be the conclusion on the findings.

1.5 Problem Definition

The car parks in UTeM are not sufficient for both staffs and students. The high rate of having vehicle is due to the huge area of campus which is too inconvenient to go around without any transport. It is wasting a lot of time and energy to move from one building to another. The very great number of vehicles has caused the unorganized traffic. This situation happens because the drivers who are late had to park at the illegal places when there are no parking spaces. The environment will become messy and affect the harmonic study condition. To solve the problem, more car parks should be built since there is still a lot of free land in the campus. However, there are both advantages and disadvantages for both mass parking lot and leveled car park. Hence, the best option needs to be chosen to ensure the problem can be solved.

2.0 CRITERIA

The criteria that have been established for the recommended solution are as follows:

1. Price must be efficiently allocated.

2. Capacity of the parking lot must be at least 500 spaces, including cars and motorcycles for each faculty and department.

3. Parking lots must be near to where classes or activity venues.

4. Parking spaces must not be too small so that it can occupy all types of common vehicles used by students and staffs.

5. Security issues.

3.0 DISCUSSION

3.1 PART A – Feedback of the Questionnaires

1. Which type of parking space do you prefer?

Figure 3.1

Based on the figure above, the preference of respondents shows that 70% of the respondents prefer leveled car park. Meanwhile, 30% more of the respondents prefer mass parking lots. Thus, this means that the majority of respondents prefer leveled car park.

2. Which perk do you think is more important to have in a parking lot?

Figure 3.2

Based on the figure above, respondents were allowed to rank items that they would prefer to have in a parking lot. The majority of the respondents, 40%, are interested in security in the parking lot. Meanwhile, 35% of the respondents favored roofed parking spaces. Furthermore, 15% other respondents preferred roofed pedestrian passage. 7% more voted for organization of parking space. Finally, the remaining 5 % of the respondents chose environmentally friendly as an important character of the parking lot.

3. Which type of parking space do you think have higher security?

Figure 3.3

Based on the figure above, 80% of the respondents voted that leveled car park has higher security compared to 20% more who chose mass parking lot in having a higher security. Thus, it can be seen that the majority of the respondents preferred the security in leveled car parks.

4. Which type of parking space do you think will profit pedestrians more?

Figure 3.4

Based on this figure, 25% of the respondents voted that mass parking lots will have a much more comfortable pedestrian pathway. On the other hand, 75% other respondents chose leveled car park will have a much more comfortable pedestrian pathway

5. Which type of parking space do you think provides a better organization of parking space?

Figure 3.5

The figure shows respondent preference in parking space organization. 80% of the respondents chose leveled car park. Meanwhile, 20% of the other respondents voted for mass parking lots. Thus, the majority of respondents prefer the organization of leveled car park.

6. Which type of parking space do you think is environmentally friendly?

Figure 3.6

Based on this figure, 10% of the respondents voted that mass parking lots is more environmentally friendly. On the other hand, 90% of the respondents chose leveled car park as a more environmentally friendly parking space.

7. Which type of parking space do you think is appropriate to be applied in UTeM?

Figure 3.7

The figure above shows the opinion of respondent about the appropriate parking space to be applied in UTeM. 35% of the respondents chose mass parking lots to be executed in UTeM. Meanwhile, the majority of the respondents, 65% voted for leveled car park to be executed in UTeM.

3.2 PART B – Informations from Other Sources

Price must be efficiently allocated.

Both parking lots have similar prices. This is due to the amount of land to be used, construction, and also perks. The mass parking lot consumes an enormous amount of land. Thus, to fit 500 vehicle on one piece of land is not only wasteful; it is also not environmentally friendly. Furthermore, in order to have a roofed mass parking lot and pedestrian pathway, more money should be allocated to construct this. On the other hand, leveled car park does not necessarily need to consume a large patch of land to fulfill the 500 car spaces targeted. It is suggested that one level will allocate only 100 spaces, thus reducing the size of land by one fifth than of used for mass parking lot. Additionally, the leveled car park will not only be roofed automatically, the topmost roof can be made into a garden so, it will make up for the used land below.

Capacity of the parking lot must be at least 500 spaces, including cars and motorcycles for each faculty and department and must be near to where classes or activity venues.

Due to the amount of parking spaces specified, most UTeM spaces close to faculties and other buildings are small and might not be sufficient to make room for a mass car park. Thus, in this case, leveled car park is more suitable to be constructed in most parts of UTeM’s departments and faculties.

Security issues

There are a few security issues regarding both parking lots. Firstly, it is unsuitable to put CCTV at a mass parking lot because it may be exposed to whether conditions and make its life span shorter. However, it is known that most students have just got their driving license. Thus, the mass parking lot would be a safer option to avoid accidents compared to leveled car park. This is due to the spiraling or the escalating the vehicle up the leveled car park. On the other hand, leveled car park is safer because CCTV can easily be installed and it is not exposed to whether conditions. Thus, the leveled car park can be monitored all the time.

4.0 RECOMMENDATIONS

The leveled car park is recommended as the more preferable solution for the problem of limited parking space in UTeM for student and staff in terms of cost, capacity and facility compared to the mass parking lot. This report only investigated at the basic level. Hence, any further improvement should be practiced if necessary for the continued establishment of the parking in the university. There are several factors need to be considered in the future including the capacity of the parking lot. The university should provide more area in order to build the level car park. This will ensure that the parking space at each faculty may include until 1000 vehicles per time. This proactive action may lead to the decreasing of parking space problems. The next factor is the parking lot must be located at the center of the university area. In contrast, other solution like build the car park at the roof top might be considered in order to make students and staffs easily to go to their places. Besides, parking spaces must not be too small so that it can occupy all types of common vehicles used by students and staffs. Additional steps that would be interesting to look at include, determining the price that must be efficiently allocated and the facility must be provided into this parking level such as CCTV and security services. Into the bargain, the university may provide the car wash side at the parking lot since most of the staffs and students do not have much time to wash their car. From this kind of activity, the university may get the profit. In addition, the income can be used to maintain the car park area.

5.0 CONCLUSIONS

After completing this analysis, it is shown that leveled car park is the best option to be adapted by UTeM’s Asset Management & Development Office with the purpose of solving the problem of limited parking space in UTeM for students and staffs. This is due to the limited space of area. It is more competitive, reasonable and able to include more than 100 parking spaces per level. With the intention to get the result, several methods have been used such as questionnaires, interview and discussions. Based on the feedback of the questionnaires, it is found that most of the staffs and students prefer to have a leveled car park since this type of parking space is more secure, gives more profit to pedestrians, better organization of parking space and more enviroment friendly. In contrast, from the internet, discussions and interview, there are several items that should be considered in choosing the best solution of parking space for example cost, security issues, location and the total area of the parking space. Based on the stated characteristics, leveled car park is the best options due to reduce the parking space problem in UTeM.
